“If you really want to make a friend, go to someone’s house and eat with him ... the people who give you their food, give you their heart.” -Cesar Chavez
I’m Ross DiSegna, owner of Tio Mateo’s & Greenwich Bay Gourmet and here is my story.
Coming from an Italian family, cooking had always been a way of life. While finishing my senior year at Johnson & Wales University I took over my sister Samantha’s job at a Mexican-Gourmet restaurant in the town where I grew up. The owners quickly became family to me – we worked closely and I was hands-on with the day-to-day business. Four years later, I was presented with an opportunity every JWU Culinary student dreams of: restaurant proprietorship! I purchased the business in 2015.
Soon after, I moved the restaurant to a larger space. I kept the core concept of Tio’s & GBG which is a fast-casual atmosphere where you’re treated like family, but incorporated my own creativity and style. As a native of the town, a sense of community was integral to owning the business. I wanted to create a place that was comfortable for people to hang out, eat healthy, and work. I designed a modern location that offered the customer a warm space to meet friends or business partners, as well as have room for larger gatherings.
Although the menu has mostly remained unchanged, I continue to incorporate special dishes to keep things interesting and explore my dreams and passion. Sharing great food, conversation and drinks with my community is just the icing on the cake!
